Conservation Research Assistant/Coordinator, Atlanta Botanical Garden

This full time position will be approximately 50% on molecular lab management/project development/intern oversite, 30% additional conservation related project management, grant writing, and budget related tasks, and 20% administrative duties.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Molecular Biology

  Manage and execute all ongoing projects in the molecular biology lab under the supervision of the V.P. of Conservation and Research. This includes sample collection, experimental design, statistical analysis, and publication writing.

  Document standard operating procedures and lab protocols for all lab activities.

  Manage chemical and physical lab inventory, maintain and operate all lab equipment, and manage and implement rigorous safety protocols.

  Train all staff, volunteers, and interns for the laboratory

  Develop training and educational programs for high school biology interns, and undergraduate interns focused on research priorities in the molecular lab and the Department. This includes developing educational and training materials for the Orchid Training Institute and weekend workshops.

  Manage undergraduate lab training, research experiences, and internships.

Professional and Administrative:

  Collaborate with internal and external colleagues to identify, prioritize, develop, and promote opportunities for innovative learner engagement.

  Aid in grant writing and project planning for future molecular work.

  Provide assistance both technical and administrative in promoting and expanding the molecular work at ABG through partnerships, outreach, and education.

  Identify, prioritize, and execute opportunities to strengthen the STEM program.

  Collaborate with the V.P. of Conservation and Research and other colleagues to drive forward the evaluation and education research agenda.

  Attend domestic and International conferences to highlight the Departments scientific projects.

  Participate in other grant-related fieldwork, and grant funded departmental projects as requested.

  Aid administration of several grants, including grant writing, tracking funding, and filing for re-imbursements as requested.

  Aid V.P. of Conservation and Research with internal administrative duties such as filing and invoicing as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  Minimum education requirements: Bachelors degree in Science, Biology, Environmental science, Botany or related field. Masters degree preferred.

  Minimum lab experience: 2 or more years working, supervising or managing in a lab environment. Additional teaching background is preferred. 

  Lab and/or research experience in the following plant science areas; Population genetics, DNA Barcoding, Phylogenetics, and Molecular systematics.

  Project management, reporting, budget management, and grant writing experience highly desired.

  Experience with the following software or similar

  Alignment / Editing software (Geneious, CodonCode Aligner)

  Tree-building software (MEGA, Geneious, PHYLIP, PAUP)

  Microsatellite base calling/genotyping (GeneMarker, Peak Scanner)

  Population Genetics Analysis software (GenALEX, Structure )

  Statistical analysis (R, JMP, SPSS, StatGraphics)
