Plant Scientist, The Botanical Garden of the University of Bern

The Botanical Garden of the University of Bern ( maintains a collection of 6000 plant species outdoors and under glass.

The garden team is active in outreach, education, conservation and research. To complement our team we are seeking an excellent plant scientist.

The position entails

•developing the plant collection

•maintaining the data base

•research in conservation biology

•further research involving the botanical garden (conservation biological, ecological or botanical) •outreach •seeking third-party funding •collaboration with the plant ecology team of the Institute of Plant Sciences(

•strengthening the network of the garden with relevant actors within and outside academia •the opportunity to work towards the habilitation and to contribute to teaching

The candidate

•has a PhD degree in ecology, botany, conservation biology or related field •is highly motivated for botanical, ecological and conservation biological work •appreciates the specific and diverse opportunities a botanical garden offers •has excellent field botanical, ecological, experimental, statistical, and writing skills •is independent and at the same time an excellent team player •is committed to excellent science and conservation •is fluent in English and (Swiss) German (any other language is a plus, and so is a driver’s licence)

The position will be filled for an initial three-year term with the possibility for renewal. Starting date is 8 January 2018 or earlier. Applications will be reviewed from 30 September 2017 until the position is filled.
