Welcome to BGCI JapanPartnership for protecting wild plants of JapanThere are almost 7,000 native plant species in Japan and about 40% of them are endemic. This diverse and unique flora is to be proud of in the world and has supported the Japanese people's way of life which is traditionally strongly related to plants. However, as a result of factors such as urban development, over-collection, and changes in people’s lifestyle patterns, the extinction of wild plants and the loss of biodiversity have become serious problems in Japan as well - 20 plant species are already extinct in the wild, and one in four species is in danger of extinction. As centres for plant conservation, research, education and recreation, botanic gardens, the most comprehensive organisations in the field of plant sciences and other areas related to plants, are today expected to play an important role. BGCI is the world's largest network linking with world's botanic gardens for the protection of plant diversity. "Investing in Nature-Japan" - Now ClosedThrough the "Investing in Nature-Japan" programme, BGCI built many partnerships in Japan, working in collaboration with botanic gardens and other bodies to encourage the conservation of wild plants in this country.

Japan's National Network of botanic gardens are helping to support Japan in meeting it's obligations in the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation. Recent commitments include the allocation of responsibility for different plant groups to specific gardens, and new plans for capacity building. |
