Bristol Zoo Gardens - Bristol Community Plant Collection

During 2012 BGCI supported four UK gardens to re-evaluate their social role and to develop small-scale projects to engage with their local communities.  Here we profile Bristol Zoo Gardens. For more information download the BZG’s report and view a short film about the project commissioned by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

Working with nine diverse community groups, BZG set up the first ever community plant collection.  The community groups were trained to grow, maintain and harvest Calendula species in their allotments, schools, care home and residential centre.  All groups contributed 10 Calendula plants to BZG who created a public display in the gardens.  To mark the end of the project, a celebration event was held for all groups.  Not only did communities remark that there was an increase in knowledge and awareness of conservation, but they also reported a strong sense of community cohesion.
