Plant Collections

  • Special Collections:Arboretum is the oldest picturesque part of
    Botanic Garden with more than half a century
    history. Its beauty is accentuated by natural
    landscape in combination with the elements of
    regular and scenery styles. The collection consists
    of 218 species, 109 cultivars and 5 forms.
    The leading families are Rosaceae (63 species),
    Pinaceae (28 species) and Salicaceae (27 species).
    By their origin the woody plants are accommodated
    in European, North-American and
    Asian sectors.
    Collection of Perennial Plants includes a wide assortment of
    decorative, herbal, nectariferous, aromatic and
    vitaminous plants which adapted to northern
    conditions. The test of new taxons of agriculturally-
    useful plants are held in this Department,
    specialized collections of highly-decorative
    species and cultivars are created here, practical
    work of students of Biology and Medical
    Faculties of Petrozavodsk State University is
    conducted here, and assortment of perspective
    decorative plants for Karelian town planting is
    chosen here, too.
    At present, the Department contains 325
    species and cultivars. The majority of them are
    perennial plants-introducents, which are characterized
    by diversity in taxonomic, ecologicalbiological
    composition, geographical origin and
    agriculturally-useful qualities. The largest number
    of taxons have such families as Iridaceae (9 species,
    38 cultivars), Ranunculaceae (26 species),
    Lamiaceae (16 species), Saxifragaceae (14 species,
    22 cultivars).
    The exposition «Sunny Garden» presents the
    main part of collection of perennial plants for
    high light conditions. These are the representatives
    of genus Iris L., Paeonia L., Dianthus L. and
    many others.
    The exposition «Shady Garden» includes a
    complex of ornamental perennial species and
    cultivars which grow better in the conditions of
    scattered light. Among them of particular interest
    are collections of Funkia Endl., Astilbe Buch.-
    Ham. ex D. Don and Hemerocallis L. Considerable
    attention is paid to the choice of actual for
    northern gardens groundcover and wintergreen
    plants.
    The exposition «Medicinal Plants» includes
    the species of natural flora. The plants are placed
    in accordance with the display of medicinal
    qualities of treatment and prophylaxis of the
    main groups of diseases.
    Collection of Fruit and Berry Plants represents 155
    cultivars of 22 species of fruit- and berry plants.
    The collections of raspberry-bush, black currant,
    apple tree and gooseberry-bush possess the
    largest number of cultivars: 34, 25, 30 and 16 accordingly.
    Some new for Karelia species such as
    honeysuckle, cherry-plum, plum, pear, blackberry
    bush, actinidia and others have passed introduction
    lately.
    The collection «Apple Orchard» is presented
    on the territory of one hectare and numbers approximately
    100 specimens of apple-tree (Malus
    domestica Borkh.). It also includes perspective
    cultivars of this species (‘Anis seryi’, ‘Borovinka’,
    ‘Grushovka Moskovskaya’, ‘Kalvil belyi letnii’,
    ‘Papirovka’, ‘Wealthy’, ‘Uralskoe nalivnoe’,
    ‘Baltika’, ‘Melba’, ‘Langworthy’, ‘Pamyat Voinu’,
    ‘Borovinka’ x ‘Babushkino’, ‘Borovinka’ x ‘Borsdorfskoe’,
    and others).
    Highly-decorative is pear-leaf apple (Pyrus prunifolia
    ‘Hyvingiensis’) with its umbrel-like crown.
    The collection of raspberry-bush (Rubus idaeus
    L.) is noted for the variety of taxons on morphological,
    taste characteristics, crop capacity, precocity
    and length of ripening. New macrocarpous
    cultivars of raspberry-bush are ‘Zgeltiy Gigant’,
    ‘Skromnica’, and ‘Meteor’.
    Liana is a group of fruit- and berry plants
    which is not widely spread in the North. Perspective
    are kolomikta actinidia (Actinidia kolomikta
    Maxim.) and magnolia-vine (Schisandra chinensis
    K. Koch.) which have nutritional value and at the
    same time are herbs and highly-decorative plants.
    Of special interest are southern cultures like
    blackberry bush of ‘Aqavam’ sort and blackberry–
    raspberry bush hybrid of ‘Tayberri’ sort which had
    berries in this conditions.
    The growing of new nontraditional horticultural
    crops singled out among local wild-flora is one of
    the modern directions of Russian gardening. In cooperation
    with the Gardening Council of Finland «Puutarholito», Botanic Garden conducts a research of Rubus arcticus L., an exotic horticultural crop.
