About the Zagreb University Botanical Garden

Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb was founded in 1889 by prof. Antun Heinz. The Garden is situated in the center of Croatia’s capital Zagreb, in the southern side of the Marulic square. Since 1971 the Garden has enjoyed statutory protection as a monument of culture and nature. Most of the Garden is occupied by a park-arboretum laid out in landscape (English) style, with floral parterre constructed in formal (French style), two small artificial lakes (ponds), systematic fields, long shadede corridor (pergola) etc. Valuable national flora is grown in several rock gardens.
The glasshouses are not open to the public, but most items in the collection of tropical and subtropical plants can be seen outdoors in the summer. The collection numbers aprox. 5000 different taxa.
