About the Korea National Arboretum

The Korea National Arboretum (KNA) was originally known as ‘Gwangneung Arboretum’ (1987-1999) and is situated within the pristine Gwangneung Forest (between, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (2010) which has been preserved for more than 540 years since 1468. It was designated as a national arboretum on May 24, 1999 and is the nation’s top forest biology research institute.

Strongly research-oriented, the KNA focuses on the conservation and development of plant biological resources, while aiming to enhance the public’s understanding of forest ecosystems through various educational programs operated at the arboretum. In addition to its 15 thematic gardens and Forest Museum, there are several key research facilities at the KNA such as the Korea National Herbarium, the Seed Bank, and the Tropical Plants Resources Research Center.

Extending over an area of 1,123 ha (Gwangneung Forest - 2,420 ha), the KNA is home to 6,855 plant species and 4,313 insect and animal species.

The KNA aims to conserve and develop plant resources through research, and to enhance the public's understanding of the importance of forests :
- Develop our regional reference collections and increase their accessibility
- Conduct research in systematics, biological interactions,
genetic resource conservation and horticulture
- Support the conservation and sustainable use of plant resources in Korea and other countries
- Raise public awareness of the value of forests and nature
- Conserve biodiversity in Gwangneung Forest
