About the Botanical Garden and Herbarium, Department of Botany

The Botanical Garden and Herbarium (BG&H) department of Botany at University of Malakand, Chakdara Dir (L.) Khyber puthtunkhwa, Pakistan launched in 2006 by Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan and registered with the Botanical Garden Conservation International in 2014. In the botanical garden, 7 thousand herbs, shrubs and trees are growing tolerable. They have economical, medicinal and ethno-botanical application cited in different literature. The garden has been properly looked after and retained fine. The garden is well equipped with lath houses and glass house. Several representative small gardens like, Quranic garden, Olive garden, Jasmine garden, Punica garden, Cacti garden and Rose garden have already been installed.
Herbarium is a collection of pressed and dried plant specimens mounted on herbarium sheets. About 2000 dry plant specimens are also preserved in the herbarium under proper defined protocols collected from different localities of Malakand division. More than 60% plants are endemic to Malakand division, and fully acclimatized with the environmental condition of botanical garden and herbarium.
Different approaches have been tested for domestication of the endangered and medicinally important flora of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In this connection different pilot project has been started/completed/running with collaborators, like Caralluma, Olea, Phaseolus, Pisum, Cicer, Ricinus, Nigella and Brassica etc.
