About the Calke Abbey

The early 18th-century mansion is surrounded by informal pleasure grounds, laid out by Sir Harry Harpur and his son, Sir Henry, between about 1770 and 1820. The extensive walled gardens are being sympathetically restored by the National Trust. The flower garden has formal bedding in bold contrasting colours. The physic garden provides a wide range of fruit and vegetables, including many old varieties. Key architectural features include the partially restored orangery, the famous - and unique - 18th-century auricula theatre, extensive glasshouses and the gardener's bothy. Beyond the walled gardens, the pleasure gardens have been fenced to exclude deer and allow replanting of shrubs and trees.
