About the Jardín Botánico Atlántico de Gijón

The Atlantic Botanic Garden specializes in the flora and vegetation of the Northern Atlantic. It is organized in four main collections exhibiting the local flora, the useful plants of the Old and the New Worlds, a recreational garden from the 19th Century, and the main biomes from both shores of the ocean. The garden includes two natural woods, the alder forest of the river Peñafrancia and the Tragamón oak dehesa.

    Ecologically oriented collection that holds the native plant communities of the Cantabrian territories of NW Spain. The collection is committed to the preservation and study of the local flora.

    Plant Factory

    Educational collection that focuses on the useful side of plants on the northern shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Special attention is given to the exchange of plant species between the New World and the Old.

    La Isla Historical Garden

    Recreational garden built in 1870 for the local industrialist Florencio Valdés. Its restoration in 2003 has preserved the original romantic plot while the plant collection has been expanded with ornamental species from all around the world.

    Atlantic Itinerary

    A voyage through the landscapes of the Northern Atlantic, especially from the temperate and boreal regions. The North American Boreal Biome is currently being developed, and in the near future the Mediterranean and Tropical regions will be represented as well.
