About the Purwodadi Botanic Garden

Purwodadi Botanic Garden is an 85 hectares garden located in Pasuruan, East Java, Indonesia. It was established on January 30th, 1941, and specifically designated to conserve plants from typical habitats of low lands and dry areas.

Several important plant taxa including Orchidaceae, Musaceae, Arecaceae, Fabaceae, Dioscoreaceae, Apocynaceae, Ebenaceae, and other taxa, have been conserved in this garden, collected from a wide range of areas in Indonesia. Research programmes have been focusing on plant taxonomy, biology, ecology, and propagation.

This garden has attractive areas, such as Bougainville Park, Mexican Park, and Bungur Avenue making this garden as one of the popular tourists destinations in East Java.

  • Special Collections:Orchidaceae, Musaceae, Fabaceae, Bamboos, Ferns,Bamboos, and other Indonesian native plants that have typical habitats lowlands and dry areas. Currently, the garden recorded a total of 11,429 specimens in cultivation, representing 1,858 species of which there were 319 orchids species, 30 Bamboos species, 60 ferns species, 114 banana cultivars, 157 species of Fabaceeae,and 96 spesies of Arecaceae.

    Orchids:
    Purwodadi BG has 319 orchid species, and many more are still being identified. So, in total, the number of orchid species can reach approximately 400 species. Of these, 5 species are endemic to Java, i.e. Paphiopedilum glaucophyllum, Rhynchostylis retusa, Eria javanica, Tuberolabium odoratissimum, and Trichotosia uriesiana. Paphiopedilum glaucophyllum is chosen to be the symbol of Purwodadi BG because it is endemic to East Java.

    Bamboos:
    Bamboos species that have habitat specialisation in low land and dry areas are Dendrocalamus asper, Bambusa blumeana, Gigantochloa manggong, Schizostachima irratum, Dinochloa matmat, Bambusa vulgaris, and Gigantochloa apus.

    Ferns:
    Asplenium nidus, Adiantum trapeziforme, Lygodium circinnatum, Platycerium coronarium, and Athyrium esculentum are amongst important taxa in the fern collections of Purwodadi BG.

    Banana (Musaceae):
    There are about 114 cultivars of banana in Purwodadi,which are native to Indonesia and mostly collected from Java. For example, Musa acuminata and M. balbisiana.

    Fabaceae:
    Some of Fabaceae collections that are specialised in low land and dry habitats are Crudia bantamensis, Adenanthera pavonina, Parkia speciosa, and P. timoriana.

    Arecaceae:
    Areca catechu, A. pinnata, and Borassus flabellifer are some of collections of Arecaceae in Purwodadi BG.
