About the Park for the Preservation of Flora and Fauna
At a time that living organisms are disappearing at an alarming rate, especially through habitat destruction, the Park for the Preservation of Flora and Fauna of the Technical University of Crete, which extends to 30 hectares, constitutes a small but important area where native plants and co-existing animals are protected and can develop without human intervention.
Crete is home to a particularly rich flora including 1893 documented plant species of which 159 are endemic to the island. Τen percent of Cretan plants are considered threatened and need protection. The Park is unique in Crete and one of only a few in Greece.
Its aims are:
a.Conservation of the native plants of Crete with particular emphasis on threatened and endemic species, as well as species with economic and cultural value such as medicinal, aromatic, dye plants, plants used for handicrafts and construction, for environmental protection, etc.
b. Research and Education regarding:The dangers that threaten biodiversity, The consequences of biodiversity loss, The sustainable use of biodiversity, The preservation of traditional knowledge on the uses of native plants.
c. Raising public awareness of:The dangers that threaten biodiversity, The consequences of biodiversity loss,
The sustainable use of biodiversity,The preservation of traditional knowledge on the uses of native plants.
d. Recreation for visitors
The Park is a center for the development of environmental tourism.
e. Development of a collaboration network with national and international organizations and botanical gardens in Greece and abroad for exchange of information, ideas, problems, solutions and coordination of actions.
