About the Bhagalpur University Botanical Garden

The Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University lies between : 25.1400N Latitude and 86.37E Longitudes. The total area of the T. M. Bhagalpur University campus is about 264 acres. The University is located about 3 km away from Bhagalpur railway station at the bank of the River Ganga. The Bhagalpur University Botanical garden is situated on the campus of the University Department of Botany (25.1400 N Latitude and 86.5600E Longitude). The garden has a beautiful landscape and covers a total area of about eight acres of land. It is internationally recognized and available in Botanical Garden Conservation International (BGCI) and Indian Botanical Garden Network (IBGN) website. Recently, the garden has taken part in the Global Survey of Ex situ Ebony Collections of Missouri Botanical Garden and BGCI and acknowledged for the same. A large number of plants including some rare, endangered, threatened and endemic (RET &E) i.e. plants genetic resources are being conserved at present in the Bhagalpur University Botanic Garden. Some of the sacred plants are worshiped by the locals. The Botanic garden is organized various education & awareness activities such as seminars, symposia, nature camps, nature trails, etc. for awaring the students and people about the importance of conserving the rare and threatened plant species.
The garden has greenhouse, poly house, mist chamber, cactus house, circular pond, etc. At present, the garden has a living collection of more than 1300 plant species including threatened plants like Ginkgo biloba, Frerea indica, Rosa involucrata, Commiphora roxburghii var. serratifolia, Stemona tuberosa, Cycas pectinata, Siphonodon celastrineus, Ephedra, etc. The garden is the place of interest scientist, teachers, researchers, students, horticulturists, local farmers etc. Our expert group share their knowledge through the training on different aspect of ecology and conservation. The Department has a well organised herbarium with its collection of about 14,000 herbaria of vascular plants.
Van Mohotshab, Flower show, Painting competition among school students, Nature camp, Nature trait, training on medicinal plants cultivation and awareness camp are regularly organized in focused on conservation of natural genetic resources. The garden is open to all every day from morning to evening our technical staff is readily available to provide advice about their needs. The garden also provides plant materials to the students and researchers for study and research. The garden also exchanges their plants and seeds.

    Pteridophytes (19), Gymnosperms (23) and Angiosperms (1285):-
    Out of 1285 these plant species, 46 plant species are threatened (Rare- 29, Endangered- 5, Vulnerable- 22 and threatened- 9 and 1- endemic).
    These living plants exhibit life forms as herbs (563) shrubs (424) climber (135) and Trees (201) with a number of ferns, cacti and suceulents. Importance plants are Frerea indica, Ephedra sp. Ginkgo biloba, Commiphora roxburghii var sarretifolia, Terminalia bellerica, T. chebula, santalum album, etc.
