About the Buda Arboretum

One of the richest arboretums in Hungary, surrounding the Buda Campus of the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, provides a unique educational site for the Hungarian higher education in horticulture and landscape architecture. The garden is located at the southern foot of Gellért Hill in Budapest, and its area consists of two separate parts in terms of age and character: the Lower Garden and the Upper Garden. In the Upper Garden, planting began in 1893, bringing the age of the oldest trees to close to 130 years. The oldest Persian tree (Parrotia persica) and Lebanese oak (Quercus libani) of Hungary live in this garden. The current plant material of the arboretum includes almost 2,000 woody ornamental plant species and varieties, hundreds of bulbous flowers and almost 250 other perennial ornamental plants. The site is protected as nature reserve since 1975 and as a historic garden since 2005. The main function of the garden is education: it serves as a living educational supplement for academic studies in horticultural and landscape architecture engineering, and its role in applied research is also invaluable. The uniqueness of the plant collection is also due to the exploitation of diverse microclimatic conditions: the collection is especially rich in plants of Mediterranean and subtropical origin. The collection of Hungarian cultivars of ornamental trees and shrubs and the plants of domestic flora includes nearly 100 taxa. A special feature of the arboretum is that the site is located near the close centre of the capital, in an urban environment, thus its ecological and environmental utility is indisputable. It creates an outstanding and important habitat for the neighbouring fauna, where the number of protected bird species observed is almost 50 taxa.
