About the Arboretum Groenendaal - Flemish Forest Department - Houtvesterij Groenendaal
The Arboretum Groenendaal is an old forest-arboretum, dating from 1897. Lots of trees are really impressive. For example: Populus canadensis (585 cm), Sequoiadendron giganteum (480 cm), Sequoia sempervirens (320 cm), Carya cordiformis (246 cm), Sciadopitys verticilatta (95 cm)...
If you visit, don't expect a well maintained garden. The arboretum is part of the welknown Forest of Zoniën near Brussels. Because it is a forest-arboretum, the natural and ecological environment is important, so maintanance is extensif. Right now, the forest-service is setting up a new management-plan and the arboretum is getting rediscovered by everyone.
