About the The B.M. Kozo-Polyansky Botanical Garden of Voronezh State University

Botanical Garden of Voronezh State University was founded in 1937. The founder was one of the leading botanists of the world, professor of Voronezh State University, corresponding member of USSR Academy of Sciences, BM Kozo-Polyanskiy. A lot of famous scientists worked together with him: Levine RE, Zamyatin BN, Golitsyn S., Marfin FS, Rutsky IA and many others. Over the years Botanical garden was managed by professor Mashkin SI, Kireichev AN, Arkhangelskiy IP, Nikolaev EA. Currently director of the garden is Andrey Voronin.
Now, Botanical Garden of Voronezh State University is the only scientific institution in the Central Black Earth region which makes the research work in the fields of introduction of plants, identifying of commercially valuable species in the natural flora, the comprehensive study of such plant species, the conservation and enrichment of regional and world flora to develop a scientific basis for sustainable use and conservation of plant resources.
Botanical Garden of Voronezh State University has a very rich collection of living plants in the region. Expositions of the Garden include collections of trees and shrubs, collections of decorative grasses. Currently, the unique in its composition dendrological collection, including pinetum, tujetum, arboretum, lilac-garden, rosarium, geographic park, exposure of wild fruit plants, and the collection of fruit and nut species, has been created in the Central Black Earth Region. There is enough big collection of representatives from family of Ericaceae Juss., which are the most worldwide ornamental plants. The collections and exhibits are annually replenished with new species, varieties and forms. Annually the list of seeds (Index Seminum) is released, and Botanical Garden of Voronezh State University exchanges by plant seeds with more then 60 botanical gardens of the world.
The scientific work of the Botanical Garden of Voronezh State University, with its unique for the Central Black Earth Region gene pool of various representatives of the world flora, can not be overestimated for the conservation of biodiversity, re-introduction species in natural habitats, and for creation of semi-industrial plantations of various species of ornamental, medicinal and other useful plants. Only through knowledge about the biology of the studied species we can be sure in success of their cultivation and conservation in the wild nature.
