About the Botanical Garden of the Urals Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences

The Botanical Garden of the Ural Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences is the biggest regional center in plant acclimatization and cultivation, applied botany, plant taxonomy, forest ecosystems research, plant conservation and nature protection.
The basic directions of activity of the Institute Botanical Garden.
-Developing scientific principles and methods of acclimatisation and cultivation ofornamental, economically useful and endangered plants from all over the world in the Ural Region
-Developing effective methods of plant conservation and preservation of their genepool in the Ural Region, including establishment of a system of specially protected Natural territories (Natural Reserves) for conservation and of rare and endangered species of plants in the Ural Region.
-Developing scientific principles and technologies for use of the biological resources, such as renewable forest resources, providing their steady reproduction.

During recent years research has been carried out on:
- population ecology and population genetics of Pinaceae and Orchidaceae families;
- plant taxonomy;
- biodiversity;
- forest formation;
- conservation of endangered plants on the specific territories, that are under heavy anthropogenic pressure.

Plant Collections

  • Special Collections:The Botanical Garden occupies the area of 50 ha within urban boundaries. There are following main scientific collections on its territory:
    — Arboretum (10 ha, 550 species representing 98 genera and 33 families of trees and shrubs);
    — Ornamental perennial plants (about 700 taxa);
    — Rare and endangered plants of Urals (about 80 taxa);
    — Greenhouse complex large collection of subtropical, tropical and arid plants (greenhouse complex) — about 2000 species;
    — Aquatic plants (180 taxa)
    — Plant breeding areas with fruit trees and shrubs, ca. (168 taxa);
    — Medicinal and spice plants area (492 taxa);
    — Climbing plants area (80 taxa);
    On the territory of the Botanical Garden there is also a reserve a pine forest, which is approximate 160-170 years old.
