About the St. Andrews Botanic Garden
The first Botanic Garden in St.Andrews dates from 1889 when Dr.John Wilson laid out beds of plants for teaching and research purposes,in a walled garden at St.Mary's College in South Street.
The present Garden situated on Canongate was developed in the early 1960's at a site called Bassaguard,a name derived from Gaelic meaning 'farm of the priests'.
This landscaped garden with its layout of individual sections provides microclimates for a wide range of plants. Diversity is a key theme.
Shelterd by mature conifers and tree and shrub plantings, there are rock and water gardens, woodland valley, plant family beds, herbaceous and bulb borders.
Under glass tropicals and orchids, cacti, alpines and some of the more tender Rhododendrons.
