About the Jardim Botânico do Faial

Located in an old farming area of Quinta de S. Lourenço’s pastures and orange orchards, in the Flamengos valley, this Botanical Garden has been enchanting its visitors since 1986.

The Garden, with an area of 8000m2, provides a scientific, pedagogical, ecological and also a leisure contribution to the island. Its purpose besides being a pleasant place of unique beauty, and highly recommended to be visited, is fundamentally related with the management of the collection of living flora associated with botanical conservation, especially the collection of seeds of endemic species, the recovery of habitats and the sensitization to the importance of natural floristic wealth of the Azores.

The Garden keeps an extensive collection of the Azorean endemic and native plants, an area for medicinal plants used traditionally in cooking and also in ancient cures, and yet another garden area for display of exotic ornamental species from all around the world. Here you may visit a beautiful orchidarium with 30 different species. There are also some arable crops, used traditionally in agriculture that had regional economic importance in the past.

The Botanical Garden has a second zone, located in the parish of Pedro Miguel, at an altitude of 400 m. This new area, with 60 000m2 is currently undergoing the recovery of its natural habitats and characteristic species of the humid and the very humid Laurissilva. Besides the important scientific role, this zone has high landscape value.
