About the Jardin Botanico Benjamin F. Johnston

The historical Botanical Gardens were part of La Casa Grande Mansion that belonged to an American business man called Benjamin F. Johnston that came to the region and built a big emporium by the establishment of a Sugar Mill in the 1900's.

Designed by Florence Yoch a highly recognized Californian landscape architect for the design of the set of "Gone with the Wind" among others (reference book: Landscaping the American Dream: The Gardens and Film Sets of Florence Yoch:1890-1972).

Today is home of a vast variety of birds and the botanical garden that posses a big variety of trees, mainly of ornament that the Johnston made import from other countries. Exotic plants from the India, Java, Africa and Australia are well grown in this place, some of them are very rare in Latin America like the Ficus Benghaleisis, known as well as Bayan, the majestic tree from the India, considerate as the sacred tree of the God Krishna by the Indians, other examples are the Gingko Biloba and the Ficus Religiosa, from the India. It also has a vast diversity of palm trees as well as local flora.
