Food for thought at Kew: Growing veg, communities and sustainability

Have you ever fancied growing your own vegetables? Pondered the merits of balconies for crop production? Considered the future of global food security? Or, are you interested in addressing issues like these with your local community?

On Saturday 1st June, 10am-5:30pm, speakers at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew tackle Growing Veg, Communities and Sustainability in a day of innovative talks.

The Kew Mutual Improvement Society (KMIS) invites you to join expert scientists, award-winning garden designers, renowned writers and green-fingered experimenters at Kew’s Jodrell Laboratory Lecture Theatre to learn how and why people everywhere should be growing their own produce. Author Colin Tudge, Vertical Veg founder Mark Ridsdill Smith and RHS-winner Cleve West join Kevin Frediani of Paignton Zoo and Joris Gunawardena of Sutton Community Farm to discuss the green future of food.

This event has strong links to Botanic Gardens Conservation International’s Communities in Nature Programme, a groundbreaking initiative examining how botanic gardens can enhance their social relevance and responsibility by engaging communities with issues such as sustainable living, environmental education and social inclusion.  The day will also feature Jenny Foulkes from the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh’s Edible Gardening Project, a successful community initiative run in partnership with Communities in Nature.
