Following the launch of China's first-ever nationwide plant conservation strategy in early 2007, plant experts from all over China recently gathered to discuss the role of botanic gardens in implementing this strategy. High on the agenda was the conservation of China's most threatened trees. CHINA

Xiang Xiufa, a Chongqing businessman and plant conservationist, raced five years ago to rescue rare and endangered plants that were going to be exterminated by the Three Gorges Reservoir. The garden has now been starved of funds and is in crisis, with five people protecting the plants from raids. CHINA
